Children’s Library Collections

Our Collections

Our Children’s Room is home to a number of collections, with books appropriate for kids of all ages and reading levels.

FICTION COLLECTIONS

  • Board Books – Printed on thick cardboard, these books are durable and great for small hands. Holding books and learning how to turn the pages is an important part of early literacy development.
  • Picture Books – These books contain pictures that are often just as important (or more important!) than the words in them. These are great to read with children; talking about the contents of the pictures is a great way to build early literacy.
  • Concept Books – Concept books are a special kind of picture book that helps to simply explain a concept to children, e.g., the alphabet, numbers, and colors.
  • Easy Readers Fiction – Leveled readers to help children move from reading with assistance into reading independently.
  • Early Chapter Books – A step above Easy Readers, these chapter books generally feature short chapters with simple sentences and illustrations. They help children transition into reading longer chapter books.
  • Fiction Series – These books feature recognizable characters like Curious George and Clifford, as well as other series with multiple authors. These books may be appropriate for various reading levels.
  • Juvenile Fiction – Longer chapter books for older, independent readers. Kids may also wish to browse our Middle Grade Fiction collection in the Teen Space!
  • Graphic Novels – Comics and graphic novels utilize both text and dynamic illustrations to tell a story. They are also great for reluctant readers.
  • Spanish Literature – We have a small but growing collection of Spanish-only and English-Spanish bilingual texts!

NONFICTION COLLECTIONS

  • Parenting Collection – Our adult nonfiction books on topics like pregnancy, child-rearing, adoption, and more are now housed in our Children’s Room so you can browse while your children play!
